Disseminating Physical Activity Recommendations among State and Local Health Departments

Researchers are developing methods for disseminating the physical activity recommendations from CDC’s Guide to Community Preventive Services and will determine which method is most effective in reaching and guiding public health practitioners at state and local health departments. The dissemination methods include a CD-ROM program, mailings, conferences, presentations, workshops, and technical assistance. The CD-ROM program includes the recommendations and instructions on how to apply them. Evaluation will be based on information gathered through baseline and follow-up surveys sent via e-mail to all state health departments and selected city and county health departments. The information will be used to assess and compare each health department’s awareness, adoption, implementation, and maintenance of the recommendations. The researchers will also gain an understanding of the needs of state and local health departments in translating the physical activity recommendations into policy and practice.
