Researchers are surveying 350 medical directors and conducting a literature and Web-based search to identify the indicators that best measure progress toward reducing heart disease. Telephone interviews with physicians are also being conducted to determine how policies and procedures in managed care organizations influence physicians’ approaches to diagnosing, treating, managing, and preventing heart disease among people at risk. The project’s results will be distributed to medical directors, colleagues, and advocates. The researchers hope the findings will encourage doctors to take an active role in reducing heart disease by increasing the number of patients screened, recommending additional tests and treatments as appropriate, and counseling patients to make healthy behavior changes.
