Global polio eradication is within reach. The number of reported polio cases worldwide has fallen more than 99% since 1988, and no cases have been reported since January 2011 in India—one of the four remaining endemic countries. Nevertheless, poliovirus transmission is ongoing in the other three endemic countries—Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan—and in the last several years, travelers have spread polio to 39 previously polio-free countries.
Health care workers in India administer oral polio vaccine.
Please join CDC and partners on Wednesday, October 24, 2:00-3:00 PM ET, for a live Twitter chat about polio eradication.
