Extramural Research Program

Research Focus

Background

In 2006 the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act (PAHPA) mandated research to improve public health preparedness and emergency response systems. Following the passage of this Act, and at OPHPR’s request, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) convened a committee to articulate the gaps in knowledge and make recommendations regarding near-term research priorities for public health preparedness and emergency response systems.

OPHPR established its Extramural Research Program (ERP) to plan, develop, coordinate and evaluate extramural research activities in cooperation with its Divisions and Offices, CDC National Centers and Offices, or other federal agencies involved in public health preparedness and response.

The ERP announced the availability of funding for research centers at accredited Schools of Public Health to conduct public health systems research for preparedness and emergency response. The near-term research priorities recommended in the IOM report were used to broadly define the research priorities under this, OPHPR’s first, announcement for extramural research funding.
