PCD Call for Papers

Preventing Chronic Disease (PCD) invites you to submit articles for upcoming publication. Papers should promote the open exchange of information and knowledge among researchers, practitioners, policy makers, and others who strive to improve public health through chronic disease prevention. PCD is a peer-reviewed electronic journal established by the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. Articles focus on the latest developments in prevention, screening, surveillance, and population-based interventions that prevent and control chronic diseases and conditions, promote health, and examine the biological, behavioral, physical, and social determinants of health and their impact on quality of life, illness, and death across the life span. PCD Veterans Paper Featured in National Journal

Research featured in the May 17 issue of Preventing Chronic Disease (PCD) was the focus of a recent article published in the National Journal. The PCD paper focused on veterans’ health with a specific emphasis on the MOVE! Weight Management Program for Veterans and its goal to help improve the care of service men and women who are overweight or obese. The program was developed by the Department of Veterans Affairs and is the largest clinically based weight management program in the United States. The National Journal focused its article on the program’s reach and effectiveness among participants. The PCD article is one of many veterans-focused papers that are part of a collection of articles slated for publication at the end of June. PCD Board Member Weighs in on HBO Series, IOM Report

Founding board member and contributing author to Preventing Chronic Disease (PCD) Shiriki Kumanyika, PhD, MPH, was recently featured in The Weight of the Nation, a unique documentary series that premiered on HBO this month. The documentary — a collaboration between HBO and the Institute of Medicine (IOM), in association with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) — featured case studies and interviews with the nation’s leading experts as well as people struggling with obesity. The 4-part series took an in-depth look at the damage obesity is doing to our nation’s children and the major driving forces behind the obesity epidemic. Dr Kumanyika was featured in the series when it aired on HBO May 14 and 15.
Related to the series, IOM released Accelerating Progress on Obesity Prevention: Solving the Weight of the Nation. The report, released May 8, is IOM’s latest on combating the obesity epidemic. Authored by a team that includes Dr Kumanyika, the report focuses on strategies that various sectors of society can take to support individuals’ and families’ efforts to achieve healthy diets and physical activity levels. Dr Kumanyika is the chair of the IOM Standing Committee on Childhood Obesity and Prevention and was interviewed in the HBO documentary to glean information from her, and others, about her previous work and expertise.

MATCH Collection Featured on Author’s Blog

Preventing Chronic Disease (PCD) contributing author David A. Kindig, MD, PhD, featured PCD and the Mobilizing Action Toward Community Health (MATCH) papers on his blog site, Improving Population Health. Dr Kindig, one of the researchers behind the MATCH program, highlighted the recent compilation of the 23-essay collection and its easy accessibility. The MATCH papers critique underlying assumptions about metrics, incentives, and partnerships and suggest approaches for overcoming potential barriers to population health improvement. Kindig also serves as emeritus professor of Population Health Sciences and emeritus vice-chancellor for Health Sciences at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

PCD Now Offers Medscape CME

Preventing Chronic Disease (PCD) recently offered its first article for continuing medical education (CME) as part of its partnership with Medscape. PCD plans to offer at least 1 article per month for credit. CME activities have been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of Medscape, LLC, and PCD. Medscape, LLC, is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Visit PCD’s CME page to learn more.
Framing the Future Website and Blog Launched

The Association of Schools of Public Health Education Committee’s new task force that is guiding the Framing the Future: The Second Hundred Years of Education for Public Health initiative continues to seek opinions from stakeholders. The project website and blog are now live. Readers may comment on selected articles in PCD issues by visiting PCD Dialogue or by selecting the "Comment on this article" link located on the article page. We look forward to a stimulating discussion from our readers.
Submit an Announcement
We welcome brief announcements (25 to 75 words) of events of interest to our readers. In this section, we also include information (no more than 100 words) about upcoming conferences related to the prevention of chronic disease. Announcements should list the topics to be covered during the conference and may refer readers to a website with a full description of conference activities. These announcements will be put on our website within 2 weeks of approval for publication. Send all announcement requests to pcdeditor@cdc.gov.
