CDC Debuts Lean Work
CDC recently unveiled LEANWorks!, a Web site designed to help businesses address obesity. LEAN stands for Leading Employees to Activity and Nutrition. The free Web site was developed particularly for small and mid-size companies, which typically have more limited resources to devote to obesity prevention efforts. However, the tools and resources available on CDC LEANWorks! can benefit companies of any size. >> read the full text
Health Disparities and Racial/Ethnic Minority Youth
Health disparities are preventable differences in the burden of disease, injury, violence, or opportunities to achieve optimal health that are experienced by socially disadvantaged populations. Disparities often begin early in life, starting during childhood or adolescence. >> read the full text
CDC's Coal Workers' Health Surveillance Program
Coal worker's pneumoconiosis (CWP), commonly known as black lung disease is an occupational lung disease caused by inhaling coal mine dust, which results in scarring of the lungs and emphysema, shortness of breath, disability and premature death. In the last decade, over 10,000 miners have died of CWP. As an outreach effort, NIOSH, in collaboration with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), has implemented the Enhanced Coal Workers' Health Surveillance Program (ECWHSP). This program uses a specially designed mobile examination unit to perform health evaluations, develop worker histories and collect other relevant health information. >> read the full text

Retirements
D. Peter Drotman, MD, MPH, editor-in-chief of Emerging Infectious Diseases, Division of Emerging Infections and Surveillance Services, NCPDCID, will retire from the Commissioned Corps of the Public Health Service on June 30.
Personnel Changes
Kate Galatas, MPH, has been appointed acting division director for the Division of Partnerships and Strategic Alliances.
Deaths
George Martin Baer, DVM, MPH, a former CDC employee in the Division of Viral and Rickettsial Diseases, died June 2, in Mexico City, Mexico, at the age of 73.
Karen Sue Cleveland, JD, former employee and CDC's first regional emergency coordinator, HHS Region IV, died June 20, in Columbus, Ohio.
Betty Williamson, a former employee of PGO, MASO and the former Human Resources Management Office, died June 9.
