Peach Corps Volunteers
Returning Peace Corps volunteers are routinely screened at close of service for schistosomiasis based on geographic exposure risk. For volunteers who either served in or traveled to endemic areas, both stool and/or urine testing and serological testing are performed. Ova and parasite examination is performed by the physician’s usual laboratory and serological testing is performed at CDC. If infection is diagnosed, then treatment with praziquantel is recommended. Based on testing performed at CDC, a proportion of Peace Corps volunteers who resided or traveled to endemic areas become infected with schistosomes.
