Public Health Surveillance and Informatics Program Office (PHSIPO)
Division of Behavioral Surveillance
Monitoring Disease and Behavioral Health to Improve Public Health
Division Overview
CDC's Division of Behavioral Surveillance (DBS) plans, coordinates, and implements state-based surveillance activities on the health and health-related risk behavior of U.S. residents for the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). DBS also conducts other specialized surveys to support CDC programs and obtain data on important emerging health issues and to aid response to emergencies and disasters. The division collaborates with state and territorial public health departments, many CDC programs, and other federal agencies to obtain integrated information on disease, risk behavior, and health.
Division Mission
The mission of DBS is to lead the way in public health behavioral surveillance by directing today's collection of high-quality, standardized health data from U.S. states and territories, counties, and metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas. DBS findings and products help inform policymaking, aid health promotion programs, and facilitate the effective distribution of resources, while providing the foundation for developing tomorrow's enhanced surveillance methods through innovation and collaboration.
