Office of the Director

The primary mission for the Office of Surveillance, Epidemiology and Laboratory Services (OSELS) is to provide scientific service, expertise, skills, and tools in support of CDC’s national efforts to promote health; prevent disease, injury and disability; and prepare for emerging health threats.

OSELS will:

  • Be a strong partner within CDC and with external stakeholders;
  • Lead the development, adoption, and integration of sound national and international public health surveillance and epidemiological practices, based on advances in informatics, epidemiology, laboratory science, and public health research; and
  • Be an acknowledged leader in the science of public health workforce education, with programs, educational materials, and tools renowned for superior quality, relevance, and usefulness as well as for recruiting and selecting highly qualified, high-performing participants.
