Devery Howerton, PhD, MS, MT (ASCP) SI
Director
Devery Howerton is Director, Division of Laboratory Science and Standards, in the Laboratory Science, Policy and Practice Program, in the Office of Surveillance, Epidemiology and Laboratory Science, CDC. Prior to her current position, she served as the Director of the CDC infectious disease Laboratory Quality Management Program, a program she helped to establish. Her CDC experience also includes a ten year tenure in the Division of Laboratory Systems (DLS), where she served as Chief for two of the Branches. She has also worked in the private sector as a National Quality Assurance Manager with SmithKline Beecham Clinical Laboratories (now Quest Diagnostics), a large, multinational, independent clinical laboratory network, as a clinical immunology laboratory supervisor, and a research and clinical laboratory scientist.
Dr. Howerton received a BS in medical technology from the Medical University of South Carolina, an MS in microbiology and immunology and PhD in experimental pathology and laboratory medicine from Emory University. She is active with the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute, serving on the Board of Directors and as vice-chair of the Consensus Committee on Quality Systems and Laboratory Practices.
