Dr. David B. Callahan is a medical epidemiologist, a board certified family physician, and a U.S. Public Health Service commissioned officer. Dr. Callahan joined CDC as an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officer in 1999, assigned to San Diego.

After completing his 2-year EIS training in 2001, Dr. Callahan served as the medical editor for Epi-X at CDC's Atlanta headquarters. From 2002--2005, he supervised EIS officers assigned to state and local health departments, and from 2005—2011, served as a medical epidemiologist with the National Center for Environmental Health. In that role, he mentored EIS officers, The CDC Experience fellows, and many other public health trainees while leading the Asthma Epidemiology and Research team.

Beyond his regular duties, Dr. Callahan has responded to disasters and public health emergencies, including the 2010 Gulf oil spill, the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic, Hurricane Katrina, and the terrorist events and anthrax bioterrorism attacks in the fall of 2001.

Dr. Callahan holds an academic appointment in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, Emory University, where he sees patients and teaches medical students. Before joining CDC, he was in private family practice in Virginia. Dr. Callahan holds degrees from the College of William and Mary and the Medical College of Virginia.
