John Anderton, PhD, MPA
Associate Director for Communication
John P. Anderton PhD, MPA, specializes in communications planning and evaluation, theories of social influence, persuasion, and use of innovative communications technologies. Anderton presently serves as Associate Director for Communications Science for the Epidemiology and Analysis Program Office of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Prior to joining CDC in 1991, Anderton was a Program Director with the American Diabetes Association and a science educator at a planetarium in Wichita, Kansas.
At CDC, Anderton has planned and launched national health campaigns promoting childhood immunization, stomach ulcer treatment, HIV testing, and electronic medical records. Anderton also teaches media engagement sessions, rooted in his experiences during the Washington DC anthrax attacks of 2001, and the influenza vaccine shortage of 2003.
Anderton’s PhD is in Health Promotion and Behavior from the University of Georgia and his Masters Degree is in Public and Urban Administration from Georgia State University.
