Maine's Response to Obesity

  • Menu Labeling in Restaurants and Universities helps residents identify healthy versus less healthy items when selecting dining services and retail outlets.

  • Physical Activity in Afterschool/Childcare helps improve physical activity and nutrition policies in 32 licensed child care centers reaching approximately 2,000 children in Maine.

Adult Overweight and Obesity

Among Maine’s adults age 18 and over 1

  • 62.9% were overweight, with a Body Mass Index of 25 or greater
  • 26.8% were obese, with a Body Mass Index of 30 or greater

Adolescent Overweight and Obesity 2

Among Maine's adolescents in grades 9 through 12 2

  • 15.1% were overweight (≥ 85th and < 95th percentiles for BMI by age and sex)
  • 12.5% were obese (≥95th percentile BMI by age and sex)

Child Overweight and Obesity

Among Maine's children aged 2 years to less than 5 years 3

  • 17.1% were overweight (85th to < 95th percentile BMI-for-Age)
  • 14.3% were obese (≥ 95th percentile BMI-for-Age)
