Kentucky's Response to Obesity

  • Farm to School Mini-Grants – The Kentucky Department of Health provides support to counties in the state to connect schools and local farms with the goal of serving healthy meals in school cafeterias while also supporting local farmers.
  • Daily Physical Activity in After School and Childcare Settings – The Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services is working to add requirements for daily physical activity in child care settings via child care licensing regulations or state legislation.

Adult Overweight and Obesity

Among Kentucky’s adults age 18 and over 1

  • 66.2% were overweight, with a Body Mass Index of 25 or greater
  • 31.3% were obese, with a Body Mass Index of 30 or greater

Adolescent Overweight and Obesity 2

Among Kentucky's adolescents in grades 9 through 12 2

  • 15.6% were overweight (≥ 85th and < 95th percentiles for BMI by age and sex)
  • 17.6% were obese (≥95th percentile BMI by age and sex)

Child Overweight and Obesity

Among Kentucky's children aged 2 years to less than 5 years 3

  • 16.0% were overweight (85th to < 95th percentile BMI-for-Age)
  • 15.6% were obese (≥ 95th percentile BMI-for-Age)
