Florida's Response to Obesity

  • Supporting Baby-Friendly Worksite Initiatives Florida’s Department of Health is working to increase breastfeeding-friendly environments and the number of state agencies and school districts that support breastfeeding for employees through worksite policy.
  • Safe Routes to School- Florida worked to increase the number of schools participating in Safe Routes to School’s Walking School Bus program.

Among Florida’s adults age 18 and over 1

  • 64.2% were overweight, with a Body Mass Index of 25 or greater
  • 26.6% were obese, with a Body Mass Index of 30 or greater

Adolescent Overweight and Obesity 2

Among Florida’s adolescents in grades 9 through 12 2

  • 14.7% were overweight (≥ 85th and < 95th percentiles for BMI by age and sex)
  • 10.3% were obese (≥95th percentile BMI by age and sex)

Child Overweight and Obesity

Among Florida’s children aged 2 years to less than 5 years 3

  • 14.8% were overweight (85th to < 95th percentile BMI-for-Age)
  • 13.4% were obese (≥ 95th percentile BMI-for-Age)
