Counties with Over 40% Obese Adults based on Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Systems Data (2012)

This document provides supporting information for the CDC funding opportunity "Programs to Reduce Obesity in High Obesity Areas" (CDC-RFA-DP14-1416). It provides the list of counties with an adult obesity prevalence of over 40% and the states where these counties are located. These are the counties that land grant colleges and universities should work with in this funding announcement.

How obesity estimates were determined

The list of counties with an adult obesity prevalence of over 40% is based on obesity estimates generated with the use of small-area statistical modelling. To create the estimates, a multilevel logistic regression model with both state-and nested country-level random effects for obesity prevalence was developed using data from the 2012 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Post-stratification with the US Census 2010 counts of census-block populations was applied to the models to generate census-block level estimates which were then aggregated to a county level. A detailed description of the methodology is described in Zhang et al.1
