Polio Outbreak in
Dominican Republic
and Haiti
January 19,
2001
According to the Pan American Health Organization, the outbreak of poliomyelitis in the Dominican Republic and Haiti appears to be under control. Both countries have conducted mass immunization campaigns with
oral polio vaccine (OPV), and additional rounds are planned for February, and March 2001 in Haiti.
Since these cases have occurred in proximity to the United States and there is frequent travel between the United States and the Dominican Republic and Haiti, CDC is advising all State Health Departments to enhance their poliomyelitis surveillance, especially in communities with large immigrant populations.
Currently, there are no travel restrictions to the Dominican Republic or Haiti, or any other countries where polio cases are being reported. However, adults who are traveling to countries reporting polio cases and who are not immunized or whose vaccination status for polio is unknown should contact their health care provider to review vaccination options.
