WORLD TRADE CENTER HEALTH PROGRAM
Information for 9/11 Pentagon and Shanksville Responders
Background
In 2010, Congress passed the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010 (the Act), establishing the World Trade Center Health Program (WTC Health Program). Beginning on July 1, 2011, the WTC Health Program will provide medical monitoring and treatment benefits to eligible emergency responders and recovery and cleanup workers (including Federal employees) who responded to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
What does this new Act mean for individuals who responded to the Pentagon and the Flight 93 crash site?
The Act now provides for medical monitoring and treatment for emergency responders; recovery and cleanup workers; and volunteers who were directly involved in the response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the Pentagon in Arlington, VA and the Flight 93 crash site near Shanksville, PA. The Pentagon and Shanksville responder communities were not included among those served by the World Trade Center medical monitoring and treatment services that preceded the passage of the Act.
Who this may apply to:
- Fire department employees (including both fire and emergency personnel, active or retired)
- Police department employees (active or retired)
- Recovery or cleanup workers and contractors
- Volunteers (including Red Cross)
The World Trade Center Program Administrator, in consultation with experts and others, will be developing criteria for eligibility for program benefits. If you were a member of one of the groups listed above and you took part in the rescue, recovery, demolition, debris cleanup, or other related services at the Pentagon or Shanksville sites of the terrorist-related aircraft crashes of September 11, 2001, you may be eligible to participate in the World Trade Center Health Program.
