Best Practices in Workplace Surveillance:
Identification and Tracking of Workplace Injury,
Illness, Exposures, and Hazards
The NORA Surveillance Research Methods Team and DSHEFS hosted a 3-day workshop November 7-9, 2001 on "Best Practices in Workplace Surveillance". The purpose of this workshop was to identify successful workplace surveillance programs conducted in the private and public sectors, to learn from them, and to share surveillance tools and effective prevention activities. Surveillance specialists, health & safety managers, labor officials, academicians, consultants, and others with workplace surveillance responsibilities described their programs, emphasizing practical approaches to workplace surveillance. Attendees heard from more than 60 speakers in the 7 concurrent breakout sessions focusing on stakeholder issues, and exploring roles and partnership opportunities. Presentations illustrated the use of workplace administrative data, as well as, innovative uses of existing workplace data and information systems. Participants discussed current surveillance practices, describing both the difficulties encountered, and practical examples of success and impacts that can be replicated by others.
Each Workshop Attendees received a Workshop CD, which contained PowerPoint sideshows, database demonstrations, and other workshop handouts. Preliminary evaluations were very positive, many attendees calling for a repeat of the Workshop every year or two. The Surveillance Research Methods Team will meet in the second quarter to review and distill workshop recommendations.
