Draft Document for Public Review and Comment
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health
(NIOSH) invites comment on NIOSH 7704 (Beryllium in
air) and NIOSH 9110 (Beryllium on wipes) NIOSH Docket #077
The information contained in this document is still in draft form
and as such should not be considered as a final statement of
NIOSH policy.
NIOSH 7704 and NIOSH 9110 have been submitted for publication in
the NMAM, 5th Edition. Both proposed methods have an associated backup
data report that contains additional information on the proposed
method development and performance evaluation that is not included
in the methods. The methods were developed by Los Alamos National
Laboratory (LANL), and Berylliant, Inc. in cooperation with NIOSH
and the Beryllium Health and Safety Committee, a group of government
agencies and private sector companies. The methods have been independently
evaluated by a NIOSH contract lab (DataChem Laboratories) and very
similar methods were collaboratively tested by ASTM D-22 (Air Quality)
Committee.
These methods were developed for use in the field to analyze for
the presence of beryllium by sampling air or surfaces. This field-portable
technique measures a dye which is specific for the beryllium atom
and fluorescence at low concentrations.
NIOSH will consider all the comments
submitted, and make appropriate revisions to these 2 methods. These
methods will also undergo scientific peer review. The details of
this public comment and the scientific review will be referenced
on the NIOSH Web site in the near future.
