PREVENTION THROUGH DESIGN
NIOSH Prevention through Design Strategic Goals
Goal 3.0: Stakeholders access, share, and apply successful PtD practices.
Intermediate Goal 3.7: Define PtD and the steps to influence the development of this culture in each business sector
|3.7.1||Review PtD components of Occupational Health and Safety Advisory Services (OHSAS) 18001/2:1999, American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) Z10-2005 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP), and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Safety and Health Management System e-Tool. Recommend the inclusion of additional PtD program elements, as appropriate.||
|3.7.2||Review a representative sample of the commercially-available health and safety management systems; include behavior-based safety systems, for the level of inclusion of PtD principles.||
|3.7.3||Identify companies or organizations with well-developed prevention through design programs. Define the core elements, including performance metrics that have created a culture of PtD within these organizations.||
|3.7.4||Develop a PtD award process, using Minerva Canada and the Applied Ergonomics Community ERGO Cup and other health and safety (H&S) design awards as models.||
|3.7.5||The level of adoption among of PtD concepts among a subset of Fortune 500 companies in the US through a survey conducted by ORC Worldwide (now Mercer) will identify the level of leadership commitment to PtD among safety conscious corporations and determine if implementing PtD concepts is associated with the company's occupational injury and illness experience. The results of this survey will be used to develop a paper that will be published in business journals (from the NIOSH/PtD National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) Research Project).
