PREVENTION THROUGH DESIGN

NIOSH Prevention through Design Strategic Goals

Goal 1.0: Research will establish the value of adopted PtD interventions, address existing design-related challenges, and suggest areas for future research.

Intermediate Goal 1.4: Investigate the motivators, enablers, and barriers to PtD implementation.

Projects for Goal 1.4

Activity/Output Number Description Status
1.4.1 Explore the American Institute of Architects (AIA) position on including safe construction methods into designs.
Task completed
1.4.2 Investigate product liability and completed operations aspects of including elements to reduce risk of operator injury or illness into tool and equipment design.
Research opportunity
1.4.3 Facilitate communications between architecture and engineering firms and the appropriate insurance carriers to develop a risk management plan for facility design and materials to make buildings safer to construct, maintain, and operate.
Task completed
1.4.4 Gain feedback on motivators, enablers and barriers to the successful implementation of PtD from PtD organizational members, such as American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), National Safety Council (NSC), and ORC WorldWide™ (now Mercer).
