PREVENTION THROUGH DESIGN

NIOSH Prevention through Design Strategic Goals

Goal 1.0: Research will establish the value of adopted PtD interventions, address existing design-related challenges, and suggest areas for future research.

Intermediate Goal 1.2: Improve existing surveillance techniques to better identify design-related factors

Projects for Goal 1.2

Activity/Output Number Description Status
1.2.1 Investigate mechanisms to determine market penetration of safer designs. Include legislative, litigation, insurance, and market-driven mechanisms.
Research opportunity
1.2.2 Investigate effective methods for reporting design-related incidents (e.g., “Report Unsafe Products” reports sponsored by the Consumer Product Safety Commission) to determine their use as models for reporting of design-related factors involving occupational injuries/illness/fatalities or their potential. Review successful existing surveillance instruments for linking injuries, illnesses and exposures to design-related factors.
Research opportunity
1.2.3 Investigate surveillance mechanisms, including benchmarking forums and trade association surveys to effectively capture design-related worker health & safety incidents.
In progress
1.2.4 Derive research questions that would drive Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data collection of design-related injuries, illnesses, and fatalities. Integrate PtD surveillance needs into BLS data collection (see Intermediate Goal 3.2.1).
Research opportunity
1.2.5 Review existing incident investigation models (e.g., published construction models) that identify causal factors. Recommend improvements that include specific criteria for the identification and reporting of design-related factors. Adapt models to other industrial sectors and assure that they are valid and reliable.
Research opportunity
1.2.6 Create a surveillance program for green transport that includes the development of early indicators.
Research opportunity
1.2.7 Use migrant health clinics/extension service for sentinel event alerts.
Research opportunity
1.2.8 Include occupational injury and illness tracking components in health records.
