The NORA Mining Sector workshop was held at the NORA Symposium on April 20, 2006. Five individuals from three countries joined the discussion and helped identify the following priorities:

    • Australia based mine safety regulation system compared to U.S. system, comparisons with other regional systems
  • Equipment related injury
    • Interaction of people and equipment
  • New technology for Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus
    • Rescue teams
    • 2-4 hour duration backpack
  • Aerodynamic modeling of mining equipment
  • Greater utilization of surveillance database (MSHA)
    • Establishing a surv. core (SRL/PRL)
    • Work with MSHA
    • Epidemiologist on team
  • Health evaluation of retired miners
  • Health effects of mixed exposures
  • Heat stress
  • International collaboration
  • Cardiovascular disease
    • Diesel exposure
    • Ambient fine particulates
  • Fatigue management
  • Deep mining (rock falls, bursts)
  • Automation
  • Diesel control technology
  • New measurement metrics and health effects for diesel
  • Improve equip. design process (industry & manufacturers)
  • Ventilation –hard rock mining
  • Training effectiveness –Info dissemination
  • Cultural change –improving the safety culture
  • Risk acceptability @ industry level
