Abstract
Many other workers saw the perpetrator before the vicious attack. Most even recognized the potential for violence. Sadly, none stepped up to protect their colleague and now, after a horrendous attack, he's out of work and trying to recover and take care of his family with the 60% of his salary that he gets from workers' comp. And the perpetrator of the crime? Well, it didn't exactly walk away, but since it was just a small chunk of wood that had broken off a pallet, it was eventually swept away. . . How could this tragedy have been prevented? If anyone had chucked that lousy chunk of wood into the trash, none of this would have happened. Workers: If you see debris on the ground, pick it up. Even if you weren't the one who left it there. Don't use worn or crumbling pallets. Report pallet repair issues to your supervisor. Employers: Supply plenty of recycle and garbage bins to make clean up easier. No one wants to interrupt their work to take trash a long distance. Enforce a clean work area and lead by example.
