Abstract
Nickel and cobalt are recovered from an nh3-(nh4)2so4 leach solution by extracting ni with a lix-64n solution in an inert diluent and extracting CO from the raffinate with neodecanoic acid in an inert diluent. Thus, a leach solution containing CO 14.4, Ni 3.6, Cu 0.4, Fe 12.9, Mn 98.4, and as 65 g/l was purified to remove cu and as by h2s; fe by nh4oh-nh3; and mn by o3. The ph was adjusted to 10.5 With nh3 and the solution was treated with o2 at 50 psig for 6 h at 80 deg-85 deg c to convert ammineco(2+) to ammineco(3+). Ni2+ was extracted by 20 pct lix-64n in kerosine and co3+ was extracted from the ni raffinate solution by 20 pct neodecanoic acid in kerosine. The co-bearing organic was stripped with 25 g/l h2so4 and CO was electrowon from the CO solution. The cobalt recovery was 95 pct.
