Abstract
This paper discusses the principles and effectiveness of combination methods for breaking rocks using thermal energy to initiate subsurface fractures and rock weakening. The application potentials of combination processes are examined with examples of a thermohydraulic method for primary breaking and thermomechanical method for secondary breaking of hard rocks. Based on theoretical predictions of water jet cutting of thermally weakened rocks, a thermohydraulic combination process for hard rock kerfing is advanced.
