Abstract
A computer model capable of simulating the basic production unit in a variety of underground mine systems has been developed at the Bureau of Mines Twin Cities Mining Research Center. This paper describes the application of this model to analyze the economic feasibility of using a longwall mine system for thin, flat-lying deposits in hard rock. The proposed system, which utilizes a mechanical mining machine, offers greater recovery as well as safer mining conditions in comparison to the current room-and pillar system.
