Abstract
The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation which shows that titanium carbide is an effective deoxidizer for metal produced from prereduced iron ore pellets in an electric arc furnace. Although it is less effective when scrap is charged into the furnace, titanium carbide is shown to be a better deoxidizer than silicon carbide. Although aluminum remains the most effective deoxidizer, the report shows that titanium carbide can be an effective substitute when pellets are used.
