Abstract
The office of surface mining reclamation and enforcement (OSM) give three options for compliance with the ground vibration limitation. These options, the subject of this discussion, are: adhering to a scaled distance of 60 ft/lb1/2; developing a lower scaled distance for a particular site through a seismic survey, and adhering to that scaled distance; and monitoring all blasts and keeping vibrations below 1 in/sec at any structure not owned by the operator. Scaled distance calculations are shown and examples showing the development of modified scaled distances are given. Various types of instrumentation, and the advantages of each, are described. Blast design techniques to minimize vibrations are explained. The central theme of the paper is compliance with the vibration standards with minimum expense.
