Abstract
The Bureau of Mines is investigating the application of an automated extraction system (aes) to increase production output. Four companies are completing preliminary designs that can be used to modify various manufacturers' existing continuous miners. The aes is a continuous mining system that satisfies three requirements: the system is ideal for three-entry mining; the mining, bolting, and haulage are simultaneously taking place in the same entry; and the section foreman can quickly communicate with the entire crew and is able to oversee all work functions with minimum time spent moving from place to place.
