Abstract
The application of automation and robotic technologies to coal mining equipment at the face offers improvements in worker safety and efficiency. The evolutionary introduction of autonomous, intelligent machines to perform the most hazardous tasks in underground coal mines may become a reality within the next 10 to 15 years. The U.S. Bureau of Mines advanced mining systems research program is developing the technology necessary to achieve this goal. This program consists of both core and applications research that focuses on the fundamental issues of sensor-based, computer- assisted, machine control technology.
