Abstract
High-temperature incineration was evaluated as a potential solution to the management of municipal refuse. Major advantages of high- temperature incineration are up to 97.5 pct volume reduction, separation in the molten state to a metal and glass residue, and reduction of pollution problems. The full potential of high- temperature incineration can be realized if the residue is considered a raw material resource for conversions to useful metallic and ceramic products. Process variables that could alter the final material properties of the metal and glass residue are combustion atmosphere, garbage composition, incinerating temperature, and length of soak.
