Abstract
Bonus plans have been amazingly successful in some organizations, and it is encouraging to note that some of these successes have been in coal mines. However, a recent U.S. Bureau of Mines-sponsored study by Dr. Paul Goodman found that several bonus plans at underground coal mines are simply not working very well. Some important lessons about the design of bonus plans for coal mines can be learned from studying these plans and seeing how they differ from their more successful counterparts. This paper discusses some of the common mistakes made in designing bonus plans for coal mines.
