Abstract
The U.S. Bureau of Mines has completed research to empirically estimate the probability of spark ignition in resistor, inductor, and capacitor circuits in 8.3 pct methane-air mixtures. Tabular and graphical data are presented for currents and voltages that correspond to probabilities of spark ignition from 10-3 to 10-7. Data are presented in the format used in Underwriter's Laboratories Standard UL 913, to provide a quick, graphical reference. Statistics are presented that indicate that for spark ignition probabilities between 10-5 and 10-7, depending upon component and test parameter values, the ability to cause spark ignition by electrical means ceases.
