Abstract
An investigation of the possibility of improving the grinding characteristics of gabbro ore containing copper and nickel sulfides through a thermal shock treatment technique was conducted. The results indicate that the breakage characteristics of the gabbro ore particles can be significantly improved by preheating the ore particles to a temperature around 400 deg. C followed by rapid water quenching. For a given power input and feed size, the thermally treated material produces a product of much finer distribution than untreated material. An assessment of the improvement in grindability was made by calculating feed size selection functions for untreated and heat-treated materials.
