Abstract
This paper provides an in-depth discussion on the ear and hearing loss, including references to many documented studies showing the deteriorative effects of high noise levels, and an in-depth discussin of the background and concept of the noise exposure damage risk criteria and noise dose, which takes into effect noise levels and exposure times. Also discussed are the United States federal noise regulations pertaining to mining, the occupational noise problem (including references estimating that the future hearing- related compensations to U.S. workers will range from $3.4 billion to $20 billion), and the Bureau of Mines approach to mining noise control.
