Abstract
All ternary intermediate phases in the Al-Si-C system reported to date lie on the join between Al4C3 and SiC, which are the only binary compounds in the Al-C and si-c systems. The existence of Al4C3SiC is well documented and Al4C3.2SiC has been reported. During an extensive study of phase relations in the ternary system at the Bureau of Mines Albany Research Center, Al4C3.SiC was confirmed, but Al4C3.2SiC was not. In addition, a new ternary intermediate phase, 2Al4C3.SiC, was discovered, which is the subject of this communication.
