Abstract
The Bureau of Mines recently completed a survey of six U.S. longwall operations that show a consistent record of compliance with federal dust standards and six operations experiencing the greatest difficulty maintaining compliance levels. During the surveys, 4 of the 10 operations implemented improved dust controls that substantially lowered dust levels; thus the results discussed in this report are from the six U.S. longwall faces still having the greatest difficulty complying with the federal dust standards. The objective of the surveys was to (1) identify the dust control techniques that were most effective, (2) determine whether existing technology was capable of controlling dust from the major longwall dust sources, and (3) identify the areas where existing technology was not adequate.
