Abstract
Electrolysis studies by the Bureau of Mines have demonstrated that zinc or copper electrowinning can be combined with the electrochemical production of sodium perchlorate to achieve a significant decrease in the use of electrolysis energy. Current efficiencies exceeding 90 pct were obtained for each half-cell reaction, using current densities and temperatures in the ranges typically employed for the respective electrowinning and electrochemical reactions. The cationic perm-selective membrane separating the two half-cells exhibited a high efficiency, allowing less than 4 pct of the anolyte and catholyte to interdiffuse during electrolysis.
