Abstract
Previous field evaluations showed that the major cause of illumination system downtime was physical damage due to machine collisions with coal surfaces or other operating equipment. To insure good system reliability, durable mechanical protection of the illumination hardware must be incorporated into the machine structure. This required protection can best be integrated into mining equipment during design and fabrication of new machinery. The purpose of this study was to determine the best method to integrate an approved lighting system into a low seam battery- powered scoop and evaluate its performance. The report documents the work performed and the results obtained.
