Abstract
The Bureau of Mines constructed a research facility in the oil shale deposits of the Piceance Creek Basin in northwestern Colorado. The purpose of the installation is to identify the environmental effects that could be expected from future commercial oil shale mines and to develop technology needed to resolve or mitigate environmental problems. This report describes the installation, outlines the research program for which the environmental assessment was made, and presents the findings of the assessment.
