Abstract
In continuing efforts of the Bureau of Mines and the Department of Transportation (DOT) to develop a continuous drill-and-blast excavation capability in mining and high-speed tunneling, DOT developed and tested a prototype machine, including the drilling, loading, blast initiation, and shielding components. Principal emphasis was on developing a remotely controlled automated system for loading and initiating explosive charges. Except for a problem stemming from the unexpected desensitization of the explosive substance used, which has since been overcome, all components functioned properly and survived the blasting.
