Abstract
The Bureau of Mines demonstrated three methods of reducing methane emissions in underground mines. The demonstration showed that large- scale drainage through shafts, drainage through vertical boreholes following foam or hydraulic simulation of the coalbed, and drainage through gob-ventilation holes significantly reduce methane emissions in underground mines in the Pittsburgh coalbed. Slant-hole drilling as a drainage technique merits further development, and efforts are projected to study the potential of a horizontal borehole-pipeline system in underground mines.
