Abstract
A theoretical basis for the operation of conventional ionization- type smoke detectors is discussed. The three major aspects are: (1) the characterizations of an ionization chamber's performance dominated by convective transport, (2) exact solutions to equations for different electrode geometries and a broad range of operating parameters, and (3) the development of an approximation to describe the performance of a detector in the presence of smoke particles.
