Abstract
The cardiovascular findings were reported from a large cross sectional morbidity study of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (1746016) (TCDD) exposed workers formerly involved in the production of 2,4,5-trichlorophenol (TCP) or one of its derivatives. The 281 exposed workers had been employed for at last 15 years in this activity. A comprehensive set of standardized interviews and medical examinations was used to collect data from the TCP workers and 260 unexposed referents. The exposed workers showed significantly elevated mean serum TCDD concentrations of 220 picograms per gram of lipid, compared with 7 picograms of lipid among the referents. No association was found between TCDD exposure and any of the cardiovascular outcomes that were studied, including myocardial infarction, angina, cardiac arrhythmias, hypertension, and abnormal peripheral arterial flow. The findings do not support an association between long term high dose TCDD exposure and any of several adverse cardiovascular outcomes. The possibility that participation bias was responsible for their findings was investigated by conducting phone interviews with as many of the workers who refused to be examined as possible, and with a sample of referents who did not participate.
