Abstract
The Masters Degree program in occupational health at the University of Puerto Rico was designed to train industrial hygienists for the growing need of these professionals on the island. The 2 year curriculum included an industrial hygiene core, supplemented by public health and environmental health courses. During the period of this project, 33 students completed the requirements for degrees with an average of 6.6 graduates per year. Nearly half of these graduates were employed in industry, and the rest were with government agencies, public corporations or consultants. Grant support to students and improvements of laboratory and literature resources were also achieved during this time. Two adjunct faculty members were added and significant improvements were achieved in teaching areas such as ergonomics, safety and occupational health management.
