Abstract
A personal sampling and analytical method for the workplace evaluation of Aroclor-5460 (11126424), a representative formulation of polychlorinated terphenyls, was developed and described. A Spectro Grade glass fiber filter supported by a backup pad in a polystyrene cassette filter holder was selected for the personal air sampler. This sampler was compatible with a personal sampling pump capable of a flow rate of 2.0 liters per minute. Filters were extracted with 4 milliliters of isooctane. Three methods for the determination of polychlorinated terphenyls were evaluated: these included a gas chromatography method using a capillary column, a gas chromatography method using packed columns, and a method involving high performance liquid chromatography. Gas chromatography with electron capture detection proved to be the most suitable method. The pooled relative standard deviation was 8.1% for the determination of 0.995 to 99.7 microgram quantities of Aroclor-5460 spiked onto filters. The authors conclude that the described method appears to be a useful technique for the determination of Aroclor- 5460 in workplace atmospheres; this method may also be applicable to other formulations.
