Personal Dust Sampling with the CIP-10 for a Better Medical Management of the Pneumoconiosis Risk in Coal Mines.

Personal dust sampling as a means of managing the pneumoconiosis risk in French coal mines was discussed. Static sampling has been used to obtain ambient dust concentrations in French coal mines for regulatory purposes. A personal dust samplers, the CIP-10, was developed specifically to measure personal exposures to respirable dust in mine environments. The CIP-10 was a 18 by 7 by 2.5 centimeter size instrument weighing only 300 grams that could be easily worn by miners. It operated at a flow rate of 10 liters per minute and collected the respirable fraction of the dust within a rotary foam. The dust could be ashed or separated from the foam for analysis. The CIP-10 had enough capacity to monitor a full 8 hour shift. A survey of respiratory dust exposures conducted at the Wendel coal pit in the Lorraine region showed personal respirable dust exposures averaging 11.2 to 91.5mg/m3 during pneumatic stowing operations. Because of the high exposures associated with the technique, pneumatic stowing has not been used in mines in the Lorraine area since 1986. Other studies with the CP-10 have been able to document unsuspected exposures, such as those of electromechanics who experienced exposures up to 5.15mg/m3. The CIP- 10 has also been used to monitor personal exposures of miners with X- ray evidence of pneumoconiosis who have been transferred to less dusty jobs. The authors conclude that surveys conducted with the CIP-10 have made useful contributions to improving the methods used to control pneumoconiosis in French coal mines.
