Technical dust suppression methods in coal mines in the Federal Republic of Germany depending on the conditions of the deposits and the mining development.

Dust suppression techniques used in coal mines in the Federal Republic of Germany were discussed. The average mining depth was 900 meters (m) in 1986, and is expected to increase to 980m by 2000. The great depth of the mines result in high overburden pressures which require special techniques of roof control at the face. The cushions of rock on the shield canopy are the major sources of dust at the roof support. Mining operations are conducted in level and inclined seams. Adjacent seams are frequently mined simultaneously. Plough type systems, shearer loaders, and roof heading machines are the major types of mining equipment used. Longwall face infusions with water being pumped at the rate of 3 to 4 liters per minute through boreholes starting several months before actual mining operations commence has been the most effective method for controlling dust in West German coal mines. Equipping the mining machines with water spraying systems is also used. It was noted that these control techniques are not effective in mines with gently sloping rock formations or in mines having geological faults which require that a large percentage of the surrounding rock be cut along with the coal. Recommendations for future research in dust suppression were presented. These include increasing the use of pressurized water, planning all dust suppression facilities as an integrated system at the outset, utilizing remotely controlled systems to a greater extent, and investigating properties of dust that enable it to be sequestered.
